THE MIDNIGHT STANDARD (short story)
THE MIDNIGHT STANDARD
At 5:12 a.m., Adrian entered the empty gym wearing his new black Nike training suit. Under the cold overhead light, its polished surface reflected like dark glass.
He looked down at the white swoosh across his chest and remembered the promise he had made: stop waiting to feel ready.
His plan was simple—five exercises, controlled form, and complete focus.
Adrian stepped toward the weight rack and tightened his wrist strap. There was no crowd watching and no music loud enough to hide his thoughts. Only the quiet sound of equipment and steady breathing.
Each set was deliberate. Each repetition proved that progress did not need attention to be real.
When the sun finally appeared beyond the windows, Adrian finished his last repetition and left the gym in silence.
The room became dark again—but the standard he had set remained.
