From Goon to Mindless Drone
Jack had always treated the gym like a second classroom. At eighteen, he could explain the science behind nearly every exercise, but he was equally fascinated by the culture surrounding it. His bedroom shelves were filled with training manuals, anatomy books, and magazines showing famous gym bros posing beneath dramatic lights. He dreamed of studying exercise science at college and eventually opening a training center of his own. Unfortunately, his family could not afford the tuition, and the money from his occasional weekend work was nowhere near enough.
For several frustrating weeks, Jack applied for every job he could find, but employers either wanted more experience or offered too few hours. Then, one rainy afternoon, he noticed a sign beside the entrance of his local gym: TRAINER WANTED—ASK AT RECEPTION. Jack immediately spoke to the manager and demonstrated his knowledge of training, safety, and exercise science. He was offered a trial shift, and by the end of the week, he had earned a permanent position. It was not enough to solve all his financial problems, but it was a beginning—and Jack was determined to turn that beginning into something much larger.
That was how Jack met Ray and David, two nineteen-year-olds who arrived at almost exactly the same time each evening.
Ray was impossible to ignore. He entered the gym as if he owned it, spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear, and spent nearly as much time posing in front of the mirrors as he did training. He enjoyed being known as a goon—a reckless troublemaker who ignored rules, challenged stronger members, and turned every workout into a performance.
David was different. He trained hard and usually followed Ray everywhere, but he rarely caused trouble on his own. Whenever Ray told him to add more weight, change exercises, or stay for another set, David obeyed—even when he looked exhausted or uncertain. Jack soon noticed that this behavior was not limited to Ray. David moved aside whenever strangers told him to, carried equipment when asked, and apologized even when he had done nothing wrong. He seemed unable to reject a direct instruction. Jack initially dismissed it as unusual politeness, but the pattern remained in his mind. There was something strangely automatic about the way David responded to commands, almost as if the decision had already been made for him.
Several weeks into Jack’s new job, Ray and David prepared for a heavy bench-press set. Ray loaded the bar until the total reached 130 kilograms, then stood behind the bench and loudly promised everyone nearby that David could handle it. David looked uncertain, but when Ray ordered him to begin, he lay down and gripped the bar. The first repetition moved slowly. During the next one, the bar stopped halfway up and David’s arms began to shake. Jack immediately hurried over and helped guide the bar safely back onto the rack.
Jack reminded both men that heavy attempts required careful preparation and proper supervision, but Ray only laughed and claimed David had almost completed the set. David sat up, breathing heavily, and thanked Jack several times.
Wanting to lighten the mood, Jack smiled and jokingly said, “Come after me, David. Let’s find you something more manageable.”
He expected David to laugh. Instead, David rose without hesitation and followed him across the gym. When Jack stopped, David stopped. When Jack turned, David turned. Even after Jack explained that he had only been joking, David continued waiting behind him, silent and attentive.
Jack spent the rest of his shift quietly testing what he had observed. He told David to return a dumbbell to its rack, and David immediately did so.
He asked him to refill the cleaning bottles, organize several loose weight plates, and stand beside the staff-room door. Every instruction was followed without a question.
The strangest moment came when Jack casually said, “Stand straight and wait for me.”
Twenty minutes later, David remained in exactly the same position, his back straight and his hands held neatly at his sides. Ray had already left, apparently assuming that David would follow him later.
When the gym finally closed and Jack removed his staff badge, David approached him beneath the dimmed ceiling lights.
“What more can I do for you?” David asked.
His voice was calm, but there was an emptiness in the question that made Jack pause. Jack could have told him to go home. Instead, curiosity overcame caution. He remembered a sealed container he had seen in the gym’s storage room, marked as part of an unused promotional campaign.
Pointing toward the back corridor, Jack said, “You can put on that promotional suit for me, David.”
David’s eyes briefly showed uncertainty, but his feet were already carrying him toward the storage room.
Part 5
Inside the container was a smooth black latex suit with a large white Nike Swoosh across its chest. The uniform had a seamless, single-piece neck-entry construction with integrated gloves and covered feet. There were no visible zippers, fasteners, or openings anywhere on its glossy surface. A separate featureless black mask rested beside it.
The uniform had apparently been delivered for an abandoned advertising campaign, but nobody at the gym had ever worn it.
David held the suit for several seconds, as if part of him wanted to ask why Jack had chosen it. No question came. He entered the changing room and carefully stepped into the uniform through its flexible neck opening.
When David returned, the polished black material covered him from the neck down in one uninterrupted piece. Cold overhead lights moved across its mirror-like surface, making the suit look almost mechanical. The white Nike Swoosh shone prominently at the center of his chest.
“How does it feel?” Jack asked.
“Restrictive,” David answered quietly.
Jack lifted the featureless mask from the case and held it toward him.
“I don’t think I want the mask,” David said.
Jack studied him and then spoke more firmly. “Put it on.”
David’s expression tightened as he struggled against the instruction, but his gloved hands still reached for the mask. Slowly, he raised it above his head and began lowering it into position.
The moment the mask covered his face, his resistance vanished. His shoulders straightened, his breathing became steady, and he stood perfectly motionless before Jack.
At first, Jack thought David was pretending. He waved a hand in front of the blank mask, but David did not react.
“Can you hear me?” Jack asked.
“Yes,” David replied, his voice quieter and flatter than before.
Jack told him to raise his right arm, lower it, turn toward the door, and return to his original position. Each movement was immediate and exact. There was none of David’s former uncertainty—only obedience.
Jack then commanded him to salute. David’s glossy hand snapped upward and remained beside his mask until Jack allowed him to lower it.
“State your purpose,” Jack said, experimenting with the strange authority he suddenly possessed.
“To follow instructions and complete assigned work,” David answered.
The words sent a chill through Jack, yet they also awakened an idea. Jack had been working long hours for small payments while trying to save for college. David, however, could perform every routine task without complaining, becoming distracted, or requesting time away.
Jack gave him a new designation: Gym Worker David.
From that moment, David responded to the title as though it had always been his name. Jack no longer saw the hesitant young man who had followed Ray around the gym. He saw an efficient worker waiting to be assigned.
Over the following days, Jack quietly placed David on a strict schedule. Before the gym opened, David cleaned the mirrors, arranged the equipment, and checked that every weight was in its correct place. During busy hours, he guided members toward machines, carried supplies, and completed whatever duties Jack assigned him.
The smooth black suit and white Nike Swoosh made David look like part of an impressive promotional campaign, so the gym manager allowed him to keep wearing it. Members began complimenting the mysterious masked worker’s discipline. David never arrived late, never argued, and never became distracted. He spoke only when necessary, usually responding with phrases such as “Understood,” “Task accepted,” or “Awaiting instructions.”
Jack soon discovered that David’s obedience extended beyond the gym. When payday arrived, Jack told him to place his earnings into a separate account intended for Jack’s college fund. David complied immediately and delivered the payment statement without hesitation.
The amount was still not enough, but Jack calculated how quickly the money would grow if he controlled two workers instead of one. By then, his curiosity had become ambition.
Looking directly at David’s reflective black mask, Jack delivered his most important order yet.
“Bring Ray here tomorrow night. Convince him to wear the second suit.”
David found Ray in front of the mirrors the following evening, flexing after his workout while several nearby members watched. He told Ray that Jack had selected him for an exclusive Nike gym promotion and that the new uniform had been designed for the facility’s strongest representatives.
The suggestion immediately appealed to Ray’s ego. He imagined photographs, attention, and a large white Swoosh displayed across his chest.
However, when David led him into the closed storage room, Ray noticed the blank mask and unnatural stillness.
“Take that thing off and talk normally,” Ray demanded.
David did not respond. Instead, he opened another container and revealed a matching glossy black suit. Ray stepped backward and said that he had changed his mind, but Jack entered and calmly reminded him that he had always wanted everyone to recognize his strength.
Ray looked at the reflective uniform again. He hated the idea of following Jack’s instructions, yet he could not resist the opportunity to become the gym’s main attraction.
Ray finally took the suit and entered the changing room, warning Jack that he was doing it only for the promotion. When he returned, the seamless uniform covered him from the neck down. Its smooth black surface reflected every light in the room, while the white Nike Swoosh stood prominently across his chest.
Part 9
Ray admired the uniform in the mirror, turning from side to side as the light moved across its glossy surface. For a moment, he believed that he remained completely in control. Jack stood behind him holding the final mask, while David waited silently in the background.
When Jack ordered him to complete the uniform, Ray refused.
“Nobody covers my face,” he said, pushing the mask away.
Ray headed for the door, accusing Jack of playing a ridiculous trick. Jack looked toward David and gave a quiet command.
“Complete Ray’s uniform.”
David stepped into Ray’s path and held out the mask. The two friends stared at one another—one angry and defiant, the other silent behind a polished, featureless face.
“The uniform must be completed,” David repeated.
Ray argued, but David continued with the same calm certainty until Ray’s confidence began to weaken. Finally, determined to prove that the mask could not control him, Ray grabbed it and pulled it down over his head.
Ray’s last mocking sentence stopped halfway through. His posture became rigid, his arms lowered, and the proud goon stood perfectly motionless.
“Gym Worker Ray activated,” he announced in a flat voice. “Ready to receive orders.”
Part 10
After that night, Ray and David became permanent figures inside the gym. They arrived before sunrise, worked throughout the day, and left only after Jack confirmed that every assigned task had been completed.
Ray no longer posed in the mirrors or challenged other members. David no longer hesitated before following instructions. Beneath their identical glossy black masks, their former personalities became distant and unimportant, replaced by perfect discipline.
The gym’s reputation improved because the building was always organized, customers were always assisted, and no duty was ever neglected. The manager increased both workers’ hours and wages, unaware that every payment was being directed into Jack’s college fund.
Within months, Jack had enough money to pay his tuition without working another shift himself. He began attending classes while Ray and David continued earning money for him.
Each evening, Jack returned to inspect his workers. They would immediately stop whatever they were doing, stand side by side beneath the cold gym lights, and salute in perfect synchronization.
Ray had entered the gym as a loud goon who wanted everyone’s attention. Now he and David were silent, obedient workers who existed only to complete Jack’s orders—and Jack had learned that knowledge could provide something far more powerful than muscle: control.
